Broke Down on US-1 or Northlake Boulevard? A Calm Step-by-Step Guide
The car starts to shudder on US-1, or the dashboard lights up as you cross Northlake Boulevard. Your hands tighten on the wheel. This guide is here to slow things down and give you a simple order to follow.
Short answer: hazard lights on, get out of traffic into a side street or lot if you can, stay buckled in unless the car is unsafe, call 911 if anyone is hurt, then call a tow. In Lake Park and the north county, call (561) 680-6845.
Step 1: Signal and slow down
Turn on your hazard lights. Ease off the gas and look ahead for somewhere to turn. On US-1 and Northlake, side streets and plaza parking lots come up often, and they are much calmer places to stop than the edge of the road.
Step 2: Choose the safest place to stop
- A parking lot or side street is best.
- If you cannot leave the road, stop as far right as you safely can.
- Turn the wheels away from traffic and set the parking brake.
Step 3: Stay in or step out?
On busy roads, waiting inside with your seat belt on is usually safest. Step out only if the car is unsafe, for example if you see smoke or smell fuel. Then use the side away from traffic and stand well back.
Step 4: Make the right call
| What is happening | Who to call first |
|---|---|
| Someone is hurt, there was a crash, or the car blocks a lane | 911 |
| The car is stopped safely | A towing company |
| Smoke, fire or a fuel smell | 911, then move away from the car |
Step 5: Share where you are
Tell us the road, your direction and the nearest cross street or business: for example, “northbound US-1 just past Park Avenue” or “Northlake Boulevard near the Old Dixie Highway intersection”. If your phone shows your location, read it to us. We will repeat it back so you know we have it right.
While you wait
- Keep your hazard lights on.
- Keep the doors locked if you are inside.
- Sip some water, especially in the heat.
- Save phone battery by lowering the screen brightness.
- Take a few slow breaths. The hard part is done.
After the tow
We can take your car home, to your mechanic or to a shop you choose. Ask us for a receipt if you plan to send it to your insurance company.
